(March 27, 2003) – Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WA) today introduced legislation requiring studies on the health and environmental impact of depleted uranium (DU) munitions, as well as cleanup and mitigation of depleted uranium contamination at US sites where DU was used or produced. McDermott, a medical doctor, believes that DU “may well be associated with elevated rates of birth defects in babies born to those exposed to it” and argues that a thorough investigation is “imperative and immediate,” said McDermott. Co-sponsors of the Depleted Uranium Munitions Study Act of 2003 include Reps. Charles Rangel (D-NY), Edward Markey (D-MA), John Conyers (D-Mich.), Stephanie Tubbs Jones (D-OH), Barbara Lee (D-CA), and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI).
