SAN FRANCISCO (January 9, 2004) — The recent earthquake in Iran has created a tragedy of unfathomable proportion. While media coverage diminishes, the crisis continues to escalate. Estimates now place the dead from this tragedy at 50,000 and more than 100,000 people are homeless.

In the current climate of tension between the US and the Islamic world, it is critically important to support relief efforts informed by principles of human rights and social justice. For the first time since the Iranian hostage crisis ended in 1981 an American plane has landed in Iran to deliver U.S. aid, but more help is needed.

Some of you have expressed an urgent desire to contribute to short-term aid, long-term recovery efforts. In response, Tides has created the Iran Earthquake Relief Rapid Response Fund as a way to support the urgent work that needs to be done.

Please make a tax-deductible online donation now. To donate by check, see below. If you have a donor advised fund at Tides, you may contact your Tides philanthropic advisor directly.
