Israel Bombs Lebanese TV, Mobile Phone, Transmission Towers
Arab Herald
BEIRUT (July 22, 2006) — Lebanese officials say Israeli warplanes have destroyed transmission towers for television stations and mobile phones in two parts of northern Lebanon.
The strikes in Fatqa and Terbol killed at least one Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation employee and wounded another. LBC is the top rated television network in the Middle East, and has been broadcasting since it was launched in 1985.
Saturday’s attacks were the latest against Lebanese communications infrastructure since Israel began its offensive against Hezbollah militants in Lebanon 11 days ago. They have immobilsed television and radio stations, facsimile, landline and mobile phone communications.
Meanwhile, Israeli troops and tanks are massed along the Lebanese border as ground forces carry out attacks against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon. Israeli officials called the operations limited and say they are against targets that cannot be hit by airstrikes.
UN peacekeepers on the border say Israeli forces are still in the Lebanese village of Maroun al-Ras near the border.
The Israeli offensive has been countered by frequent rocket attacks by Hezbollah, including in the port city of Haifa Saturday.
Israeli aircraft dropped leaflets over southern Lebanon on Friday, urging civilians to move north of the Litani River, about 30 kilometers north of the Israeli border.
In Beirut, President Emile Lahoud said the Lebanese army will defend the country and prove it is an army worthy of respect.
Israel’s offensive started when Hezbollah captured two soldiers in a July 12 raid into Israel. More than 300 Lebanese and 34 Israelis have been killed in the violence, with another 500 Lebanese and 200 Israelis wounded.

Scores Buried in Mass Graves in Lebanon
(July 22, 2006) — Scores of the dead from Israel’s onslaught on Lebanon have been buried in mass graves.
At a hospital in Tyre, the ancient port city hit hard by air strikes, workers said they had to clear out refrigerator trucks being used to hold bodies, The Los Angeles Times reported.
I’ve been a doctor for years, and I’ve never seen anything like this, said Nabil Harkus. They can’t fight Hezbollah because Hezbollah is not an army. They kill the people because they think it’s the only way to stop Hezbollah.
While the Lebanese government puts the death toll at more than 350, the Times said it may be significantly higher. One woman, Soubiha Abdullah, was at the hospital to identify the bodies of 24 relatives killed by an airstrike on the highway as they fled a southern village.
At the hospital, volunteers used pine boards to throw together crude coffins to hold bodies buried in long trenches.
