Veterans Climb Government Building, Call for Arrest of Bush and Cheney
(September 23, 2008)— Right now, five military veterans — from Veterans for Peace — are occupying a 35-foot high ledge at the National Archive Building and have raised a 22×8-foot banner reading,:
“DEFEND OUR CONSTITUTION.
ARREST BUSH AND CHENEY:
WAR CRIMINALS!”
The veterans currently risking arrest have declared their intention to stay on the ledge, fasting for 24 hours “in remembrance of those who have perished and those still suffering from the crimes of the Bush administration,” according to a written statement.
On the ledge, the veterans have brought with them a portable PA system, and they are broadcasting recorded statements from prominent Americans for the impeachment and/or arrest of George W. Bush and Richard Cheney. Other impeachment activists are at the entrance of the National Archives distributing “Citizens Arrest Warrants” to those waiting in line.
This is the type of boldness that activists have displayed across the country to bring much-needed attention to this movement.
Impeachment on the Move
Every week and month, the Bush administration seems to add to its long list of impeachable crimes. This month’s crime: the handing over of $700 billion of taxpayer dollars to his buddies on Wall Street. ImpeachBush.org has launched a nationwide initiative called VoteNoBailout to stop Bush’s bailout legislation. Since yesterday, over 56,000 letters have been sent to Congress saying the White House has no right to transfer the people’s money to the richest people in the country.
The impeachment movement is exposing these crimes on every front, raising the questions the corporate media won’t, and taking dramatic action when needed. From the Bush administration’s unspeakable war crimes to the recent bankers’ coup d’etat, the impeachment movement has been at the forefront of the fight back.
The impeachment movement is in fourth gear, and moving full-steam ahead. Please give a much-needed donation right now so that we can continue to take on the Bush administration’s many crimes. This is an enormous grassroots movement — with no corporate sponsors — so your help makes all the difference.
Speak With President of Veterans for Peace
The Group that Occupied National Archives
Tonight, Wednesday, September 24th, you can speak live on the radio or submit your questions through an online chat room for Elliott Adams, the president of Veterans for Peace and one of five veterans who yesterday climbed a 9-foot fence and occupied a 35-foot high ledge to raise a 22×8 foot banner stating,:
“DEFEND OUR CONSTITUTION.
ARREST BUSH AND CHENEY:
WAR CRIMINALS!”
Adams was also the only spokesman for any grassroots organization who testified at the six-hour non-impeachment impeachment hearing in the House Judiciary Committee on July 25, 2008, at which he delivered the most powerful testimony and was not asked a single follow-up question: http://afterdowningstreet.org/node/35043
Adams is also a descendant of U.S. revolutionary Sam Adams.
Adams said by phone from his spot on the ledge overlooking the entrance to the Archives Building yesterday: “This turned out excellent. We’re very happy with the response we’ve gotten to ‘Arrest Bush and Cheney for War Crimes’. We considered staying longer this time but we are not prepared for longer than this…although we may be back again, soon.”
The veterans stayed on the ledge and fasted for 24 hours, as they had planned. Reportedly, Adams wanted to stay longer.
Here are videos of that action:

Adams was a paratrooper in the infantry serving in Viet Nam, Japan, Korea, and Alaska. He has served his local community in a variety of capacities such as: President of the School Board, Mayor, Committee Chair of BSA Explorer Post 17, President of Rotary, Master of the Masonic Lodge.
Elliott left politics to become an activist. Attending untold numbers of demonstrations, working at many levels, from stapling signs to doing logistics and organizing work for United For Peace and Justice and the War Resisters League, School Of Americas Watch, Peace Has No Borders, Veterans For Peace and many other organizations, at events across the country.
Elliott moved from being a soldier to a nonviolent warrior. He is Nonviolent Training Coordinator for Veterans For Peace, and a nonviolence trainer for the Fellowship of Reconciliation and on their CCP Leadership Team. He has also done nonviolence and social movement trainings for School of Americas Watch, Peacemakers of Schoharie, Student Environmental Action Coalition, War Resistors League, and other groups.
