WASHINGTON (May 26, 2011) — Thank you for your calls and e-mails to convince Members of the House of Representatives to vote against the Afghanistan War.

Earlier today, the House voted by a narrow 204-215 against the amendment offered by Representatives Jim McGovern (D-MA) and Walter Jones (R-NC) requiring the President to establish a timeline for the transition of US military operations to the government of Afghanistan.

While this effort lost, the amendment produced the most votes thus far to end the war in Afghanistan.

Last year, in a Democratic-controlled House, a similar amendment was defeated 162 – 260, with only nine Republicans voting for the amendment and 98 Democrats voting against.

Today, 26 Republicans voted “aye” and only eight Democrats voted “no.”

Democrats are more united than ever against the war, with 96% of House Democrats voting for the amendment this year compared to only 61% last year. The most notable convert to the “yes” side is the moderate Democratic whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD).

The Republican vote against the war almost tripled.
