ACTION: Tell Congress to End the War NOW
Drew Hudson / USAction & TrueMajority
President Obama has promised to bring home 30,000 of the more than 100,000 troops in Afghanistan by next year. The other 70,000 troops will stay at least until 2014 — and possibly longer — to continue the nation-building mission. (1)
The president’s plan marks important progress, and it proves that the debate is shifting from whether to end the war to how quickly we should end it. But that’s not nearly enough. You can’t 1/3 end a war, and the time to end the Afghanistan war is NOW, not in 2014.
So we’re not giving up, and fortunately neither are our allies in Congress. Progressive hero Jim McGovern and Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi have already promised to press Obama to end the war sooner. (2) And today, we need to back them up.
ACTION: ASK CONGRESS TO DENY WAR FUNDING
Majority Want All American Troops in Afghanistan Home Now
Jon Walker / Firedog Lake
(June 21, 2011) — In the past month there has been a massive surge in the number of Americans who want all American troops brought back from Afghanistan as soon as possible.
There is now a solid majority of 56 percent who want all the troops removed as soon as possible, while only 39 percent keep troops in Afghanistan until the country is stabilized. More.
The only reason to remain in Afghanistan seems to be out of a sense that Washington must not appear to be “weak,” that it’s leaders are not “abandoning the fight” and ignoring all the “blood and treasure” that we have invested in this war.
Unfortunately, these are the same unreasonable concerns that kept US soldiers in Vietnam — killing and dying even while LBJ and other “leaders” secretly acknowledged the war was unwinnable and privately agonized that they could see “no other alternative” but to save face by “staying the course.” This was the lesson of the Pentagon Papers. Apparently hubris is impenetrable to the force of reason.
