(June 4, 2013) — Next week, I’m heading to Yemen on a delegation of US peace advocates, where we’ll be meeting Gerald Feierstein, the US Ambassador to Yemen.
We’ll urge Ambassador Feierstein to use his influence to end US drone strikes in Yemen — especially “signature strikes” in which the US doesn’t even know who it is targeting — and to ensure that Yemeni prisoners at Guantanamo who the US government has cleared for release are sent home without delay.

End US Drone Strikes in Yemen and Repatriate Yemenis from Guantanamo
JFP Policy Director Robert Naiman is heading to Yemen on a delegation of US peace advocates, where they will be meeting Gerald Feierstein, the US Ambassador to Yemen. THE LETTER
To: Gerald M. Feierstein, US Ambassador to Yemen
We urge you to use your influence to curtail and end US drone strikes in Yemen.
We urge you to acknowledge specific cases of harm done to civilians by US drone strikes in Yemen, apologize for each specific harm, and, when requested, pay compensation.
We urge you to prioritize ending “signature strikes” in Yemen, which pose the greatest risk of civilian casualties.
As long as US drone strikes in Yemen continue, we urge you to speak publicly about them, indicating who was targeted, who was killed and injured, and why the decision for each strike was taken, in light of President Obama’s recent promise that “before any strike is taken, there must be near-certainty that no civilians will be killed or injured — the highest standard we can set.”
We urge you to accelerate efforts to repatriate Yemenis at Guantanamo who have been cleared for release, and to ensure that all Yemenis remaining at Guantanamo are released or charged and tried in a fair and transparent proceeding, and released if not convicted of any crime.
