Argentineans Slam US Meddling in Venezuela

(March 24, 2014) — Argentinean people have staged a protest rally in the capital, Buenos Aires, to condemn the United States’ interference in Venezuela’s domestic affairs. The demonstrators gathered outside the US Embassy in the Argentinean capital, criticizing Washington for plotting a coup d’etat against the Venezuelan government. The protesters also demanded an end to US meddling in the Latin American country’s internal affairs.
Venezuela has been the scene of violent pro- and anti-government protests since mid-February, which have left at least 34 people dead and hundreds more injured. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro says the recent street clashes have inflicted some ten billion dollars in damage on the economy.
The opposition blames the Maduro administration for rampant crime, soaring inflation and shortage of essential goods. The president, however, says the opposition seeks to stage a coup in the South American country with the backing of Washington.
The US Embassy in Venezuela announced on Sunday that it is suspending the issuance of new tourist visas due to what it said was a lack of personnel. This came a month after Caracas ordered the expulsion of three US consular officials, for meeting with student protest leaders “under the guise of offering them visas to destabilize the country.â€
In response, Washington also declared three Venezuelan consular officials as personae non gratae and told them to leave the US.

(March 19, 2014) — Cristina Fernandez has compared the referendum in the Black Sea peninsula to the one that took place last year in the Malvinas Islands. Back then, the international community accepted the archipelago to remain British after a referendum. This, despite strong protests from Buenos Aires against the vote.
Argentina says the Malvinas Islands, which have been under British control for 180 years, were usurped from the South American country. Argentina went to war with the U-K in 1982 in a failed attempt to rejoin the islands.
Venezuelan Protesters Slam Cuba’s
Alleged Meddling in Armed Forces
(March 16, 2014) — In Venezuela, opponents and supporters of the government have held rival rallies in the capital Caracas. Thousands of anti-government protesters marched to show their anger at Cuba’s alleged interference in the armed forces. They wanted to reach a military airbase, but police stopped them by using tear gas. Protesters in turn pelted them with stones.
Meanwhile, supporters of President Nicolas Maduro have also staged a rally in the streets of Caracas. Wearing the red colors of Maduro’s ruling party, they highlighted the government’s food programs. Protests and violence have killed at least 28 people and injured hundreds over the last six weeks.
Protesters are angry about the country’s high rates of violent crimes and inflation, as well as the shortages of basic goods. The government accuses the United States of fanning the flames of protests, in an effort to topple President Maduro.
