Treat Guns Like Cars: Require Tests, Licences and Insurance

RICHMOND, Calif. (October 14, 2017) — Sen. Dianne Feinstein declared that no law would have stopped the Las Vegas shooter. That’s because no real effort has been made to force mandatory responsibility for the carnage gun manufacturers and firearm owners cause. The answer is actually obvious, and it’s been proposed but quickly silenced by the gun lobby. Mandatory gun insurance is the answer.
They say “a car is like a loaded gun,†but why is a gun not treated like a running car? A car is registered and licensed.
The driver has to take a test, and insurance is mandatory.
If you want to own over 30 firearms like the shooter in Las Vegas, be prepared to pay more. If you store your firearms wisely, locked and trigger protected, you get a discount. Each car has a unique vehicle identification number that cannot be tampered with, without severe sanctions.
Each weapon actually already has a unique number, but it’s never registered. Each driver has to study a book of rules, and pass a test to certify knowledge of the rules. Each gun owner should have to do a similar training. If you’re going to use something that can kill, learn how to do it properly. Each driver must be insured while operating a car, or face criminal and financial penalties.
Health insurance became mandatory under the Affordable Care Act because of the realization that the costs to society are each individual’s responsibility. Even the conservative Cato Institute has studied this issue and found it not in violation of the Second Amendment. The best part of this would be to sic the insurance industry on the National Rifle Association! Now that’s a fair fight!

(October 19, 2017) — My name is Sybrina Fulton and I’m the mother of Trayvon Martin.
The National Rifle Association is in the business of protecting murders, and it has to stop now. They are spreading propaganda to their over 5 million members about why they are not safe without guns, especially in relation to Black, Brown and poor people. (1).
In late June, the NRA released an aggressive promotional video for their Carry Guard insurance–which offers their members up to $1.5 million in insurance to gun down Black people.2 The ad was based in fear of marginalized peoples rising up in what we know is righteous anger.
Carry Guard Insurance is literally murderers’ insurance. The NRA has been pushing for gun owners insurance to become a state law and therefore mandatory like car insurance, but Carry Guard is inherently different and especially dangerous. Carry Guard is the NRA’s way of normalizing insurance as a necessity in ensuring safety.
With this program they are offering assistance with covering legal fees, the cost of cleaning up the remains of the person killed by the policyholder, psychological support, and training from what they call a cadre of law enforcement, military, and legal experts. The same people the man who killed my son aspired to be.
Lockton is the world’s largest private insurance firm. Lockton Affinity, created and sells Carry Guard, and Chubb Insurance underwrites the policies and takes a profit. Together they are perpetuating fear of minorities and immigrants by offering special protections to gun owners who shoot first and ask questions later.
These insurance companies are not only promoting gun violence, but they’re providing NRA members with a “license to kill.” This is another kill at will policy that is attempting to put people who kill above the law.
Families like mine already under threat from vigilantes who see our children as a threat because of the color of their skin. Insurance companies shouldn’t make a profit by making it easier to get away with murder.
The NRA’s Carry Guard program leaves the families of the slain to deal with the aftermath of murder alone, while the killer is “cushioned” by their policy. Stop them now!

NRA Carry Guard provides coverage for criminal legal defense, firearm replacement, clean up costs, payouts to bail companies, and a 24-hour legal hotline to provide shooters with guidance in how to avoid prosecution.
