Attempt to Revive the Iran Nuclear Deal
Now Faces Threats from Congress Warhawks
Win Without War
(March 10, 2022) — With each passing day, we hear from pundits that we’re moving closer to a return to the Iran nuclear deal. For anti-war activists like us, it will be cause for celebration.
But even after a deal is announced (fingers crossed), our work won’t stop. Why? Because some members of Congress are set on tanking our chances for diplomacy — and peace — by blocking the deal.
We’ve worked too hard and for too long to let this happen. But here’s the thing — many people may not even know that a new deal with Iran may be imminent, let alone that some in Congress are ready to spoil it.
We’ve got to sound the alarm and remind everyone in our communities that Congress needs to support diplomacy — NOT sabotage it. The easiest way to do that? By making some noise in local papers!
That’s why today, as part of our digital week of action to build support for diplomacy, I’m asking you to contact every newspaper editor within 1,000 miles to spread a message of peace. It may seem like a lot, but we’ve got a handy tool that’ll help you do it in just minutes.
It’s been nearly four long years since Donald Trump unilaterally broke our part of the deal and got us to this point. Now, with the Biden administration just days — perhaps even moments — away from announcing a new agreement, the hawks in Congress are circling.
They’re playing a dangerous game: by undermining US negotiations with Iran, these members of Congress are undermining our credibility and pushing our two countries closer toward war. The reality is that we need to work towards peaceful solutions wherever we can, now and always.
With a new deal, the Biden administration can choose accountability and peace — and pull us off the path to war that Trump set us on. Ultimately, reentering the deal will improve US and global security by putting Iran’s nuclear program back in a box.
This agreement is a life-or-death issue for people across the globe — for the millions of people in Iran in desperate need of medical supplies and for the billions of us living on a planet threatened by the very existence of nuclear weapons. It can’t happen a moment too soon.
Sometimes peace just needs an extra push. Can you help us spread the word?

Writing an LTE is one of the quickest, most effective ways to build power for peace. It allows people to influence and comment on the topics their local papers cover, as well as how these issues are being addressed in their communities.
Policymakers at every level, from the Mayor’s office to the US Capitol and the White House, closely track newspapers to see what their constituents are saying. Let’s make sure that everyone in our communities, including our legislators, knows that we need Congress to do all they can to support diplomacy — NOT sabotage it!
After you submit your name and address, simply choose which newspaper you’d like to submit your letter to. Then, use the talking points, tips, and sample letter to write your own LTE. Don’t forget you can come back here and submit as many letters to as many different papers as you want.
Sometimes peace just needs an extra push — can you help us spread the word?
Talking Points
- – The Biden administration chose accountability and diplomacy — pulling us off the path to war that Trump set us on.
- – Today, people in Iran continue to suffer under incredible sanctions during a global pandemic for the actions of a government they have little say in.
- – A new Iran nuclear deal will demonstrate that the United States is serious about restoring US credibility on the global stage and committed to solving pressing foreign policy challenges through diplomacy.
- – Trump’s maximum pressure failed on everything that it promised: it unleashed Iran’s nuclear program and nearly led the United States into another disastrous war.
- – A new deal will improve US and global security by putting Iran’s nuclear program back in a box. Indeed, it is the ONLY deal to stop Iran’s nuclear advancements.
- – Diplomacy is how we avoid war, and build true security. Without a deal in place, the United States faces another military conflict in the Middle East.
- – Right now, crises including COVID, war in Ukraine, and global inflation are raging and the last thing the world needs is another bloody, costly war.
Writing Tips
- The LTE section is one of the most widely read sections of the newspaper and can reach a large audience. Keep these tips and guidelines in mind when writing and submitting your letter:
- – Editors want to hear from YOU — in your own words. Write an original letter using our talking points or edit the sample version we’ve provided
- – LTEs often respond to a story, editorial, or comment quoted in a recent article. It can help to take a few minutes to do some research to find a good “hook.”
- – LTE limits are typically between 150-250 words. Keep this word count in mind and “write to fit,” cutting and reshaping to be as concise as possible.
- – You may receive a form letter confirming receipt of your submission or not hear back at all. Don’t lose heart if you do not hear a positive response. Keep checking the LTE section — and keep submitting!
- – While personal information is required to identify if you’re a resident of the media’s coverage area, your address and phone number will NOT be printed.
Sample: Restoring a Nuclear Agreement
With Iran Would Be a Promise Kept
With tensions high and Russia’s illegal war unfolding in Ukraine, a commitment to diplomacy — and peace — is urgently needed. That’s why I’m eager to see the United States return to the Iran nuclear deal.
Rejoining the deal is a clear demonstration that the United States is ready to turn away from the foreign policy failures of the Trump years and is, instead, committed to rebuilding US credibility on the global stage. It shows that we are still capable of solving pressing global challenges through diplomacy.
And it can’t happen a moment too soon. A renegotiated agreement is a life-or-death issue for people across the globe. Trump’s “maximum pressure” campaign ultimately drove us to the brink of war and has only allowed Iran’s nuclear program to grow. Today, people in Iran continue to suffer under incredible sanctions during a global pandemic for the actions of a government they have little say in.
Diplomacy is how we avoid war and build true security. Biden campaigned on restoring the nuclear agreement with Iran, and doing so is a critical promise kept. I look forward to hearing that a new deal has been finalized and am eager to see my fellow community members, especially our members in Congress, support this push toward peace!
