ACTION UPDATE: End US Support
For the Saudi-led War in Yemen
Senator Bernie Sanders
WASHINGTON (December 16, 2022) — Our support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen is one of the great moral stains on our nation.
It is a war that most Americans know little about, and one that Congress never voted to authorize.
It is a war that has resulted in more than 375,000 deaths, with the United Nations estimating that 70 percent of those are children under the age of five, mostly due to starvation and preventable diseases.
It is a war that has resulted in “14 million people — half of the population — facing a clear and present danger of imminent famine,” and two-thirds of Yemenis not knowing where their next meal is going to come from.
It is a war that has resulted in the worst outbreak in the world of cholera, if you can believe it, because Saudi bombs have destroyed Yemen’s water infrastructure. According to UNICEF nearly 10 million Yemenis do not have access to adequate water and sanitation.
It is a war that has resulted in more than 80% of Yemenis now living below the poverty line and has resulted in millions of people losing their income because so many businesses cannot operate in these conditions.
It is a war that has made BILLIONS OF DOLLARS for companies like Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Boeing, while people of Yemen see “Made in the USA” on bombs that are destroying their country.
Evidence: Lockheed-Martin bomb killed Yemen children in schoolbus.
It is a war that has gone on under Democratic and Republican presidents. That is the bad news. And make absolutely no mistake about it, it is truly horrific.
The good news is that I am working very hard to make sure our support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen comes to an end.
As you may have read, I recently introduced a War Powers Resolution to end the United States’ unconstitutional support for our catastrophic war in Yemen.
And I am currently working with the Biden administration in the hopes that we can come to an agreement on modifications to get it passed in the Senate and hopefully in the House.
If we cannot, then we’ll be back on the floor with the current bill.
I believe more and more Americans and members of Congress are increasingly aware of the brutality of the despotic Saudi regime — a dictatorship which allows no criticism, treats women as third-class citizens, and was directly responsible for the cold-blooded murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
And I believe it is increasingly clear to everyone that the United States should not be partnering in Saudi Arabia’s disastrous military adventurism.
My hope is that we can get it done. My hope is that we can end a war no one can seriously claim is making us any safer.
Will it be easy?
No. Ending wars is never easy.
Is it possible?
Yes. I believe this is our best chance yet.
THE PETITION
The US support for the Saudi-led war in Yemen
is one of the great moral stains on our nation.
Please add your name to Bernie’s petition
if you support the passage of a
War Powers Act resolution
to end our involvement in this war.
For far too long, the forces of militarism have kept us engaged in never-ending wars.
This is our chance to successfully use the War Powers Act to move us forward in ending the horrific Saudi-led war in Yemen.
In solidarity,
Bernie Sanders
