ACTION ALERT: The Lasting Wreckage of
George W. Bush and His Band of Neocons
Yint Hmu / Win Without War
“MISSION ACCOMPLISHED” — that was the banner under which George W. Bush gave a speech on the deck of an aircraft carrier to declare that “in the battle of Iraq, the United States and our allies have prevailed.”
That speech was 20 years ago. And now 20 years later, we’re still picking up the pieces of the endless war Bush and his band of neocons launched under a banner of LIES.
Our team here at Win Without War, along with our coalition partners and champions in Congress, are working around the clock to finally, fully end the Iraq war and repeal the 2002 AUMF — the legal authority that enabled the invasion.
Together, our collective pressure has already pushed the Senate to pass the repeal back in March, and now it’s with the House. We have momentum on our side and that means it’s time to act!
The Mission Accomplished speech was an early endless war folly. Here are the real costs that it has racked up over the decades:
- Approximately 300,000 Iraqi civilian deaths;
- 9.2 million Iraqis displaced, alongside 20 million-plus from Afghanistan, Libya, and other countries;
- 30,177 U.S. active duty personnel deaths by suicide;
- $14 TRILLION of taxpayer money to the Pentagon. Research shows that up to a quarter of that amount went directly to weapons contractors like Lockheed Martin and Raytheon;
- At least 440 million metric tons of carbon emissions, enough to power roughly 55 million homes for a whole year…
And so much more countless death and destruction that we will never fully understand.
As long as this 2002 AUMF — the legal authority to wage war in Iraq — is still on the books, current and future presidents can — and will — continue to use military force in Iraq. And right now, this is our best chance to get the job done.
The Senate has already voted to repeal, and President Biden has announced that he will sign the bill. All we have to do is get a clean version – no amendments, no poison pills, no nonsense – through the House. That’s where you come in. Take 30 seconds and sign this petition to demand the House immediately repeal the 2002 AUMF.
THE MESSAGE:
To members of the House of Representatives:
I urge you to immediately pass a clean version of H.R.932 to repeal the authorizations for use of military force against Iraq.
Thank you for working for peace,
Yint, Eric, Sara, and the Win Without War team
