World BEYOND War’s Global 3-day Conference on
Nonviolent Resistance to Invasions, Occupations, and Military Violence

World BEYOND War

(September 3, 2023) — You say you’re against war, but what’s the alternative? Managing conflict nonviolently is one of the three core strategies of World BEYOND War’s Alternative Global Security System. But when the rule of law and diplomacy are failing and violence is underway, both seasoned activists and newcomers alike often question whether unarmed resistance can be effective against military invasion, occupation, and war.

Throughout three days of virtual panels, training, and discussion sessions, #NoWar2023 will make the case for the efficacy of nonviolent resistance as a tool for conflict resolution, highlighting case studies from around the world of unarmed civilian-based defense against invasions, occupations, and dictatorships.

Hosted virtually on the Zoom Events platform, World BEYOND War’s #NoWar2023 annual global conference brings together peace and anti-war individuals and organizations from around the world to share, reflect, strategize, and organize towards the abolition of war.

Unarmed Resistance at NoWar2023
Marc Eliot Stein / World BEYOND War

(August 30, 2023) — In a preview of our upcoming #NoWar2023 global conference, Episode 51 of the World BEYOND War podcast dives deep into the practice of nonviolent resistance, or unarmed civilian protection, which is the topic of this year’s annual gathering of peace activists.

Our guests Rachelle Friesen and Randy Janzen are both experienced hands-on experts in this important field, and they join Rachel Small and Marc Eliot Stein for a wide-ranging discussion of how teams of trained and qualified civilian peacekeepers can provide badly-needed resistance in the most difficult crisis situations in the world, as well as what it means to enter war zones to assist some of the most vulnerable and oppressed communities around the world today.

We talk about the work being done by organizations like Community Peacemaker Teams, Unarmed Civilian Protection and Nonviolent Peaceforce, and about the important lessons unarmed peacemakers learn when they begin to engage in this difficult but vital work.

We break down the vocabulary of unarmed protection — accompaniment, deescalation, engagement, observation — and survey the disturbing spread of global crises that currently call for nonviolent resistance, which range from invasions of indigenous land in isolated areas to attacks on vulnerable urban populations to actual war zones from Palestine to Ukraine.

Thanks to Dinah Thorpe for the song “Hummingbird” that opens this episode. Dinah Thorpe will also be appearing at #NoWar2023.
