ACTION ALERT: No More Weapons Shipments

World BEYOND War

(October 13, 2023) — The world’s leading weapons dealer, the US government, urgently needs to hear from the people of the United States and the world.

President Joe Biden has told the US Congress that he will ask for funding to send huge piles of free weapons to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, to prolong two wars and help start a third — and possibly the world’s last.

Biden reportedly intends to combine weapons for these three wars, plus additional weapons for further militarizing the US border with Mexico, all in one piece of legislation. The strategic thinking is that various Congress Members who find the nerve to oppose one horrific war will be unlikely to find it to oppose three wars at once.

Regardless of how the legislation is concocted, we need to stop the weapons shipments and replace them with diplomacy and a new focus on the human and environmental crises that these wars defund, distract from, and exacerbate.

EAW: Regarding the growing humanitarian disaster unfolding in Gaza:Responding to acts of armed terrorism by resorting to collective punishment of a captive, unarmed civilian population is a war crime. In this case, Israel seems intent on committing an act of “genocide.” The US should not be assisting in the commission of an unpardonable humanitarian calamity that would outdo the horrors of Guernica.

In 2021, India attempted to intervene and resolve the crisis.

De-escalation and Diplomacy in Israel/Palestine

(October 13, 2023) — So many wars. So little understanding.
Among the wars raging in the world now are two to which the US government may soon send more free weapons: Ukraine and Israel, plus a third location where the war-for-profit industry seems intent on stirring up trouble: Taiwan.

In all three cases, there is no military solution, no shortage of blame on all sides, no exact “equivalence” between any two sides, and plenty of people willing to defend atrocities by one side or the other (which only benefits the propaganda of the opposing side).

All three cases distract from and defund human and environmental crises.

Let’s try to talk as many people off the ledge of war-madness as we can.

A Short-list of Courageous Political Leaders
Some Congress Members who have made useful comments on the Gaza/Israel war are, predictably, being slandered quite viciously. One of the best ways to show them support in a money-run system is to donate to their campaigns.

“I condemn this heinous attack on Israel, and am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of civilian life. We must do everything in our power to deescalate violence, engage diplomacy, and avert bloodshed.” — Sen. Ed Markey

“Right now, in the current crisis, our country has a responsibility, I believe, to call for a ceasefire and to call for the whole world to come together to try to stop the escalation of what is taking place in the Middle East.” — Rep. Barbara Lee

“Just as we honor the humanity of the hundreds of innocent Israeli civilians and nine Americans who were killed this weekend, we must honor the humanity of the innocent Palestinian civilians who have been killed and whose lives are upended . . . Instead of continuing unconditional weapons sales and military aid to Israel, I urge the United States at long last to use its diplomatic might to push for peace.” — Rep. Ilhan Omar, Oct. 9

“As part of achieving a just and lasting peace, we must do our part to stop this violence and trauma by ending US government support for Israeli military occupation and apartheid.” — Rep. Cori Bush, Oct. 7

“As long as our country provides billions in unconditional funding to support the apartheid government, this heartbreaking cycle of violence will continue.” — Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Oct. 8

“Hamas’ terrorist assault on Israel will have horrific short- and long-term consequences. . . .For years, people of good will throughout the world, including some brave Israelis, have struggled against the blockade of Gaza, the daily humiliations of occupation in the West Bank, and the horrendous living conditions faced by so many Palestinians. . . . Right now, the international community must focus on reducing humanitarian suffering and protecting innocent people on both sides of this conflict. The targeting of civilians is a war crime, no matter who does it. Israel’s blanket denial of food, water, and other necessities to Gaza is a serious violation of international law and will do nothing but harm innocent civilians.” — Sen. Bernie Sanders, Oct. 11

“I believe deeply that the majority of people of all kinds do not want to see Gaza leveled and innocents killed, & that they feel and hold the pain of Israeli families destroyed. We must build on our solidarity and common humanity to stop an atrocity in the making. End the cycle.” — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Oct. 12
