(December 26, 2024) — A successful nuclear test means building a weapon capable of global ‘annihilation.’

It also means poisoned air and land, lifelong illness, and generations of suffering for those working and living in the surrounding areas. We know because from 1945 to 1992, the US government exposed tens of thousands of servicemembers, people in rural communities, Indigenous peoples, miners, and others to tests that left them and their children struggling to this day.

Despite that cost and danger, Trump officials seem poised to jumpstart a new wave of devastation and harm by restarting US atomic testing for the first time in over 30 years.

The good news? Trump can’t resume nuclear testing on his own. Testing these weapons takes money — a lot of it. But Congress holds the purse strings, and just days ago we saw 38 Republicans join Democrats to defy Trump’s budget demands, opening a crucial path to push back.

That’s why Win Without War is already mobilizing the grassroots, connecting with movement partners, and raising the alarm about the threat level on the Hill. It’s how we’ll ensure any attempts to restart nuclear testing don’t ever get off the ground — and so we’re reaching out today:

North Korea treatens to reusme testing unless US lifts sanctions.

Congress passed the US nuclear testing moratorium in 1992, but ever since, hawks and weapons lobbyists have been loudly calling for their resumption. In 2020, that nightmare almost became a reality when Trump considered conducting a ‘rapid’ nuclear test.

Win Without War immediately jumped into action, organizing tens of thousands of activists to contact their members of Congress and working every relationship we’ve built on the Hill to stop it before it gained traction.

On January 20, 2025, the threat will be back and more powerful than ever. As Trump appoints hawks eager to implement Project 2025’s plans to initiate ‘the most dramatic build-up of nuclear weapons since the start of the Reagan administration'[1], the Pentagon is already in the midst of a 30-year, $1.7 TRILLION spending spree to completely rebuild the US nuclear weapons arsenal. Meanwhile, every weapons lobbyist in town is racing to spread the LIE across Capitol Hill that more weapons will make us safe.

It’s a recipe for global catastrophe and we’ve got to change course before it’s too late. The power of people speaking out can be stronger than the deepest weapons dealers’ pockets. That’s why we’re launching a crucial campaign to push Congress toward disarmament, and away from apocalypse.

Gar, resuming nuclear testing could set off a chain reaction that could last decades and accelerate an ongoing global arms race already wildly out of control. Experts warn China and Russia are already readying their test sites, as US leaders mull restarting our program.

The kicker? The MIT Wargaming Lab recently found that this kind of nuclear build-up would NOT help deter the Chinese government from using its atomic weapons.[2]
