Emergency: Political Leaders Must
Pull Back from Nuclear Brink in Ukraine
Massachusetts Peace Action
(December 26, 2024) — Along with the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament in Great Britain, Massachusetts Peace Action strongly condemns the decisions of US President Biden and British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, to allow Ukraine to use their long-range missiles to strike targets inside Russia. Firing these long-range missiles at Russia requires the direct participation of US or British military personnel.
Russia has now lowered its threshold for nuclear use, precisely to respond to such attacks by the US-made Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) and Britain’s Storm Shadow missiles.
It is very concerning that Russia has retaliated by launching an enormous hypersonic ballistic missile with a non-nuclear warhead at a major Ukrainian weapons production facility in the southern part of the country.
In addition to continuing these long-range missile attacks, Ukraine has assassinated a top Russian General outside his office in Moscow. This is an incredibly dangerous situation which risks drawing nuclear-armed NATO into an all-out confrontation with Russia, increasing the likelihood of catastrophic nuclear use.
We’re calling on all political leaders in Russia, the United States and Great Britain to pull back from the nuclear brink. The US and Britain need to withdraw their long-range missiles from Ukraine and use their political influence to secure immediate peace talks. Negotiations are the only way to end this war and remove the growing possibility of nuclear war.
