The Existential Threat Palestinians
Are Facing in the Occupied Territories
Dr. Mustafa Barghouti / Global Solidarity for Peace in Palestine
We write with an urgent invitation to you and your colleagues. Could you meet with us on February 24th, 2025, at 6:00 p.m., Palestine time, when Dr. Mustafa Barghouti will address rising violence and the existential threat Palestinians are facing in the Occupied Palestinian Territories?
Dr. Mustafa Barghouti, a Palestinian physician, human rights advocate, and General Secretary of the Palestinian National Initiative, has been a leading voice in exposing the realities of occupation and mobilizing international solidarity.
In this discussion, he will provide critical insights into the escalating violence, mass displacement, and systemic oppression Palestinians face, particularly in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Dr. Barghouti will also discuss urgent actions needed from the international community, including strategies for diplomatic advocacy, humanitarian response, and grassroots mobilization.
We represent Global Solidarity for Peace in Palestine, a coalition of 150 international faith-based and civil society organizations across five continents. During our last regularly scheduled Monday meeting (on 10 February 2025), Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza updated us about the sudden escalation in attacks on their lives, homes, and neighborhoods as the Israeli government, its military, and paramilitary groups continuously threaten their survival and very existence.
Israel’s continued bombing campaigns and targeted attacks on the West Bank and East Jerusalem have led to the mass forced displacement of more than 30,000 Palestinians from their homes. Since the so-called ceasefire agreement that went into effect on January 19th, 2025, Israel has shifted its genocidal campaign away from Gaza to the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
It has imposed hundreds of new checkpoints bringing the total to 800, which restrict the movement and strangle the livelihoods of the Palestinians. Also alarming are the rise in settler violence, the increasing imprisonment of Palestinians, and the slowing and blocking of agreed upon aid deliveries into the Gaza Strip.
Mindful of President Trump’s recent announcements about taking over the Gaza Strip and relocating Palestinians to neighboring countries — which are tantamount to illegal occupation, ethnic cleansing, and colonization — we have requested meetings with the Secretary General of the United Nations as well as the President of the United Nations General Assembly.
In our letters to both officials, we emphasized the stark necessity of holding an emergency meeting of the United Nations General Assembly to clarify the obligation of Member States under international law to uphold the United Nations Charter, and to draft a resolution recommending that both Israel and the United States should be suspended from the General Assembly because they continue to wage a genocidal campaign against the Palestinian people.
We look forward to strengthening international solidarity during the upcoming meeting with Dr. Barghouti, and hearing from him what he and many Palestinians believe to be the best path forward and how we can help. Please mark your calendar to join us, using this link:
