WASHINGTON (February 26, 2025) — A memorial service was held for Aaron Bushnell, a US Air Force serviceman who self-immolated in response to Israel’s attacks on the Gaza Strip.
On the first anniversary of his death Tuesday, a group gathered in front of the Israeli Embassy and the White House in Washington, DC to honor Bushnell, surrounding his poster with flowers and candles.
In February 2024, Bushnell, 25, set himself on fire in front of the Israeli Embassy to protest Israeli attacks on Gaza.
“I will no longer be complicit in genocide. I’m about to engage in an extreme act of protest but, compared to what people have been experiencing in Palestine at the hands of their colonizers, it’s not extreme at all. This is what our ruling class has decided will be normal,” Bushnell said before setting himself on fire.
