Available in more than 100 countries and nearly 220 million households around the world, Al Jazeera English is recognized as a valuable, groundbreaking network that provides unparallel coverage of some of the most important and under covered regions in the world. However, most cable companies refuse to offer Al Jazeera to viewers in the US. Meanwhile, in a video discussion, the Huffington Post's Ryan Grim and The Nation's Katrina vanden Heuvel lament the "Sad State of US Media."

ACTION ALERT: Demand Al Jazeera in the USA
Al Jazeera

(February 2011) -- If you are a US subscriber to Comcast, Dish Network, DirecTV, or other commercial cable services, your access to world opinion is being filtered by corporate decision-makers. A wealth of information available to other TV viewers worldwide, has been denied viewers inside the US. One clear example is the difficulty of watching news coverage from the celebrated reporters from Al Jazeera.

Available in more than 100 countries and nearly 220 million households around the world, Al Jazeera English has quickly been recognized as a valuable, groundbreaking network that provides unparallel coverage of some of the most important and under covered regions in the world.

However, mainstream North American audiences remain in the dark. In a world that is growing increasingly smaller and more interconnected each day, it is more important than ever to have full access to news from around the world.

Al Jazeera English is dedicated to providing a voice to the voiceless, and now you have the opportunity to have your voice heard.

Go to Demand Al Jazeera to contact the cable carrier in your neighborhood and then email, call, fax or write your cable or satellite operator to demand that they carry Al Jazeera English. Your voice truly matters.

Al Jazeera English's correspondent in Cairo, Ayman Mohyeldin, tells our American viewers that we appreciate your enthusiastic support.

Largely unavailable through US cable and satellite providers, Al Jazeera has recently received a large amount of attention in the American media.

The Sad State of US Media
Katrina vanden Heuvel and Ryan Grim / Grit TV

(February 11, 2011) -- "We don't write about class struggle in the US so it's hard for us to see it elsewhere," says the Huffington Post's Ryan Grim on the failings of the US media around issues in Egypt. And The Nation's Katrina vanden Heuvel notes that Islamophobia in the US leads many to focus on fear of the Muslim Brotherhood rather than understanding the ways that Islam and democracy coexist and complement one another.

Here in the US, too, there were big media stories, as the Huffington Post merged with AOL, and Keith Olbermann signed up with Al Gore's Current TV. What's in those stories for independent media? Ryan, Katrina and Laura discuss.
