ACTION ALERT: Help Conserve Badger for Nature, Not Noise

August 28, 2015

As part of the recently-released draft Master Plan for the future Sauk Prairie Recreation Area , the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has proposed on/off-road motorcycles and high-power rocketry on the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant lands. These disruptive uses contradict the conservation goals for the property to maintain and recover the biological richness of Wisconsin’s disappearing native prairies.

ACTION ALERT: Help Conserve Badger for Nature, Not Noise

PETITION
No off-road motorcycles. No rockets at Badger.

(August 25, 2015) -- As part of the recently-released draft Master Plan for the future Sauk Prairie Recreation Area , the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has proposed on/off-road motorcycles and high power rocketry on the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant lands.

These loud disruptive uses contradict the conservation goals for the property to maintain and recover the biological richness of Wisconsin’s disappearing native prairies, particularly grassland birds. They are also not compatible with other desirable recreational activities proposed for Badger like biking, family picnics, bird watching, snowshoeing, and hiking.

And finally, quiet nature-based recreation is in keeping with promises made. The Badger Reuse Plan represents the consensus of 21 representatives of local, state, federal and tribal units of government (including WDNR!) as well as neighboring landowners, businesses, school districts and nonprofits. This public plan emphasizes conservation and low-impact recreational activities and it is still in effect today. This is our promise to the next generation and those that will follow.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:
Below is a petition to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. To help make sure your voice is heard, please type a personal note at the end of the petition. Then complete the form to the right and click ‘Submit’.

SIGN THE PETITION

Dear WDNR Bureau of Facilities and Lands,

I am writing to support the WDNR's proposals for ecological restoration, habitat management and quiet nature-based recreation on the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant lands but do NOT support proposed on/off-road motorcycles and high power rocketry.

The Badger lands are critically important in maintaining and recovering the biological richness of Wisconsin's disappearing native prairies. Surrounded by the beautiful Baraboo Hills, it is likely our largest and most viable opportunity to restore and manage a large-scale forest to grassland transition, and will play a pivotal role in the regional conservation of our grasslands and savannas.

No on/off-road motorcycles. No rockets.

Prairie is forever.

THANK YOU to the people who have already signed our on-line petition to the DNR supporting conservation and only quiet nature-based recreation on the former Badger Ammo lands. It only takes a minute to make a lifetime of difference. Go to http://cswab.org/get-involved/alerts/

P.S. If you already signed please help again by forwarding this message to 3 friends, family members or colleagues.

Letter from EAW

Dear WDNR Bureau of Facilities and Lands,

Environmentalists Against War welcomes and celebrates the cooperation between local residents and federal and state officials that has begun to transform the Badger Army Ammunition Plant into a public open space that offers hiking, birding, snowshoeing and other forms of outdoors recreation.

But we must add our voices to those who insist that the WDNR respect the priceless tranquility of nature (an experience that has been medically proven to reduce psychological and emotional stress while restoring and maintaining human health).

Let this and future generations enjoy the song of birds and the rustle of the wind over the prairie grass. The wilderness experience should not be blasted asunder by the roar of gas-powered vehicles, especially motorbikes and off-road vehicles.

And, ideally, this new natural area should also be forever closed to the guns of sport-shooters and hunters. When you work so hard to transform an ammo plant to a natural oasis, allowing the continued use of firearms and other weapons is tantamount to blasphemy.

No on/off-road motorcycles. No rockets. Prairie is forever.
