Stop Weapons Testing on the Potomac! A Long Shot vs. the Big Shots

August 1, 2018
Pat Elder / Pat Elder for Congress & The Naval Sea Systems Command Warfare Centers

Commentary: The MK-46 30 mm gun is tested in the Potomac River, not far from my house. The crabs and fish hate it and so do I. Six miles of the river will be shut down for testing on Wednesday, August 1, from Dahlgren down to Swan Point on the Maryland side, and Colonial Beach on the Virginia side. It's loud, it's dangerous, it's poisonous, and it's unnecessary. I'm running for Congress as a Green against Steny Hoyer because issues like this are never addressed by the Democrats or Republicans.

Stop Weapons Testing on the Potomac!
A Long Shot vs. the Big Shots

Pat Elder / Pat Elder for Congress

Your tax dollars at work. USS Green Bay (LPD-20) fires MK-46 30mm gun during a live-fire exercise on August 17, 2016.

MARYLAND (July 30, 2018) -- The MK-46 30 mm gun is tested in the Potomac River, not far from my house.

The river has suffered enough! Stop bombing the Potomac!

I'm running for Congress as a Green against Steny Hoyer because issues like this are never addressed by the Democrats or Republicans.

Hoyer is out of touch with his constituents. Hoyer has been busy crisscrossing the country, undermining the campaigns of progressive Democrats who threaten corporate primacy. Hoyer and the Dems are poisoned by corporate dollars. They can't think straight and they don't care about us.

Hoyer and the Democrats are enemies of the environmental movement. They're enemies of the planet. Morgantown on the Potomac and Chalk Point on the Patuxent are the two largest and filthiest coal-fired plants in Maryland. Together, they produce almost half of the state's coal-fired electricity. Burning coal is an environmental catastrophe that poisons people, air, land and the water. These plants must be shut down and replaced with clean renewable energy sources.

Hoyer has already taken $137,000 from energy companies during this election cycle. He has spent $2.3 million on the "race" and has nearly $700,000 cash on hand. Hoyer won in 2016 with 67.4% of the vote. Because the Minority Whip doesn't have to spend the millions he collects through his campaign, he is free to make substantial contributions to the campaigns of conservative candidates across the country.

If the polls conducted before the election show I have 5% of the vote, I'll be allowed to debate Rep. Hoyer. I can shake things up by demanding Medicare for all, universal college and daycare for all, cuts in defense spending and higher tax rates for the wealthy. The League of Women Voters, which hosts the debates, says I need to have 100 donors and poll 5%. Although Hoyer has millions, I've raised $3,100 from 39 folks.

I don't relish running and I don't like the spotlight. I get all weird inside. Honestly, I'd rather sit back and answer emails from all over the country from mothers who are upset about their kids being targeted by military recruiters. I'd rather write another book and tend to the garden and the chickens. I'd rather catch soft shell crabs and master the art of running trot lines. And I'd still love to land that three-foot Rockfish. But I can't be silent. It is a blessing and a curse that has been with me since high school.

I am 62. I earned a BA in social science from St. Mary's College of Maryland, along with Maryland state teaching credentials. I hold an MA in Government from the University of Maryland. Much of my life has been spent as an advocate for children, peace, and justice.

I am very fond of the truth, so, If I have anything factually wrong on my website, please let me know. I'm way human. That's different from being a corporate shill.

Can you help my campaign? Please forward this email to folks in Southern Maryland and Prince George's County.

Thanks again for your time,
Pat -- www.elderforcongress.org
